New Year, New Music

It’s a new year and for most people this equals a fresh start to their lives. People tend start going to the gym again, switch up their diets to become healthier and incorporate new habits that benefit their overall health. However, a new year also means that there will be new music from our favorite artists coming out as well. The start of 2019 did not disappoint, giving us new singles from Ariana Grande, Sam Smith and Normani, Lauren Jauregui, Dua Lipa, and more. Music has always been a method to bring people together and has a long history of creating an energy that makes people feel something. Since music is a big part of my life and the lives of many others, here are my top five songs at the moment.

1)      Glory Sound Prep Album - Jon Bellion
-        Although this first mention is not a song, I personally could not pick a song from this album that would be considered my favorite. Jon Bellion is a talented artist who puts a lot of time and effort into how he makes his music, including using his voice to make various instrument sounds. There are a total of eight songs on this album which include Conversations with my Wife, JT, Let’s Begin, Stupid Deep, The Internet, Blu, Adult Swim, Couples Retreat, Cautionary Tales, and Mah’s Joint.

2)      Dancing with a Stranger - Sam Smith and Normani
-        This song was the first track that Sam Smith and Normani collaborated on together. According to Sam Smith on James Cordon’s car pool karaoke he was a big fan of Fifth Harmony, which Normani was a part of, so this collaboration was bound to happen. Dancing with a Stranger has a poppy sound that makes you want to dance, but it also helps that both of their voices blend beautifully together.

3)      7 Rings - Ariana Grande
-        Like most of Ariana Grande’s song, 7 Rings made it to number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week. However, it did not come without controversy. Three artists accused her of stealing from them, including 2 Chainz for having the pink house in her music video, Princess Nokia for using similar lyrics and beats in her chorus, and Soulja Boy for using some elements of one of his songs. Ariana did come out with an apology and the overall song is a hit. She used samples for the “Sound of Music” and place a pop/ hip hop beat behind it making it enjoyable to listen to.

4)      Let Me Down Slowly -  Alec Benjamin
-        Alec Benjamin is a new artist that I have recently found and I find his music is to be very calming. The lyrics in this song in particular are relatable to a person who has ever been in a relationship and felt like you and your partner was drifting away. He also has another version of this with Alessia Cara in which she adds extra dimension to the song. Both versions are something that I would listen on repeat.

5)      I’m so tired…- Lauv and Troye Sivan

-        I’m so tired is a song that was newly released on January 24 ,2019 and currently holds almost three million views on YouTube. This song is something that you will want to put on in your car and take a drive. It feels like a summer song that was released in the dead of winter. The overall vibe of this song is sort of poppy but it the best way possible. If you like either one of these artist you’re going to like this song.

A Blast from the Past

We all enjoy the new music that seems to come out every week, but do you ever take the time to revisit some of the hits from past. Over the years there have been many hits and anthems that we sometimes forget about them. They’ve ranged from hip hop and rap, to R&B to pop and much more. It’s good to take a walk down memory lane every now and then and listen to a few of the old songs that made you feel something. With that being said, here are a couple of some of my throwback hits. 1)       Find Your Love - Drake -         Aubrey Graham better known as Drake is a Canadian rapper, singer, actor, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. Drake gained is rise to fame through acting on a teenage drama series, Degrassi: The Next Generation. “Find Your Love” is single from his debut album Thank Me Later that was released May 5 th 2010.
