Grammy Season

We recently celebrated the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 10th. This year it was hosted by fifteen-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys, but like many other award shows it had its highs and lows. The 61st Annual Grammy Awards was also a big night for women. There were many female nominations with several of them winning for their categories. Cardi B made history by becoming the first female to win the Best Rap Album category. There was a Dolly Parton tribute where Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, and Little Big Town all came out and sang some of Dolly Parton’s hits. Dolly Parton herself came out to sing with them as the crowd enjoyed some of her classics. There was also a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin also known as the “Queen of Soul”. Fantasia Barrino-Taylor, Andra Day and Yolanda Adams came together to perform one of her hit songs “A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like)", which was a huge success bringing the audience to their feet. However, one of the biggest backlashes from this year’s Grammy was the performance Jennifer Lopez did as a tribute to Motown. She gave a great performance, yet some people felt that it should have been another artist who could encapsulate the essence of Motown. Overall, this year’s Grammys was filled with great music, great performances, and deserving winners. Like many other people, some of my favorite songs at the moment are not Grammy-winning songs and here are a few.
1)      More Than That – Lauren Jauregui
-       More Than That is Lauren’s second released single as a solo artist. Many know Lauren from Fifth Harmony, a girl group that had a very successful run, but she and the other girls are starting to create their own music. This song has a great a beat and very catchy lyrics, but Lauren has a very beautiful and unique voice which makes this such a great song.
2)      No More – PRETTYMUCH, French Montana
 -        PRETTYMUCH is a fairly new boy band formed by Simon Cowell in 2016 and has been putting out great songs ever since. This song, in particular, the boys are talking about doing whatever it takes to get a girl’s attention but they also don’t know long they can wait for her. They want to be with that person but they don’t want to play any games. This song is very catchy and production makes you want to listen to it on repeat.

3)      Talk – Khalid, Disclosure
 -        This song was newly released on February 7th and has become one of my favorites. This track is also Khalid’s first collaboration with the electronic music duo, Disclosure. This song is talking about a relationship that seems to be going too fast and that the two members of the relationships should have a conversation to discuss where that relationship is going. This song has an R&B beat to it and is something that you can listen to at any time of the day.
      4)    Figures – Jessie Reyez
-         Figures is a song that you would listen to if you when you are in your feelings. This song talks about how hurt Jessie was in a relationship. She explains how poorly she was treated being with this person, yet she still gave her all receiving nothing back. She let them know that they are going to lose some special and real, but she also let us know that she wants them to feel exactly how she felt. The song is a story about heartbreak and you can feel the passion within her voice.

5)      Supernova – Ansel Elgort
-        We all know Ansel Elgort an actor in A Fault in Our Stars, the Divergent series, Baby Driver and many other movies, but he is also a singer and a DJ. The song Supernova portrays a love story where a man falls in love with a girl who was in love with someone else. He is then left heartbroken and compares that to an exploding star also known as a supernova. This song has a different sound to the pop songs that you would normally hear and has a blend of hip hop beats with pop like vocals.

A Blast from the Past

We all enjoy the new music that seems to come out every week, but do you ever take the time to revisit some of the hits from past. Over the years there have been many hits and anthems that we sometimes forget about them. They’ve ranged from hip hop and rap, to R&B to pop and much more. It’s good to take a walk down memory lane every now and then and listen to a few of the old songs that made you feel something. With that being said, here are a couple of some of my throwback hits. 1)       Find Your Love - Drake -         Aubrey Graham better known as Drake is a Canadian rapper, singer, actor, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. Drake gained is rise to fame through acting on a teenage drama series, Degrassi: The Next Generation. “Find Your Love” is single from his debut album Thank Me Later that was released May 5 th 2010. This track is the thirteenth song on the album, and produced by Kanye West. This song talks about what Drake would consider one of his worst character
